Overcoming Hunger in 2017
SaltPeter Trust is dedicated to improving the lives of smallholder farming families in Kachumbala and Soroti, north-eastern Uganda. In recent years, the effects of climate change have become increasingly severe, placing immense pressure on rural communities that depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
Poor rainfall in 2015 and 2016, followed by a devastating drought in 2017, led to widespread crop failure and left many families facing acute food shortages.
Thanks to the remarkable generosity of our supporters in Cardiff, SaltPeter Trust was able to purchase and distribute 5–6 tonnes of grain, providing emergency food assistance to around 300 families within our farming cooperatives, as well as some of the most vulnerable people in Soroti town.
For many recipients, this support was lifesaving. Families have since told us that the food they received sustained them through the crisis and gave them hope during one of the most difficult periods they had ever experienced.
