Strategic Development Goals (SDGs)
Over the 19 years SPT have contributed to 10 of the 17 SDGs as follows:
GOAL 1: No Poverty
SPT have established 4 women’s cooperatives in the Kachumbala area of Teso, NE Uganda, comprising 271 members, providing training on agriculture and finances. Each member was funded for 8 months to grow a crop of cassava on 1 acre of their own land. At harvest they each had sufficient food to feed a family for 12 months, and surplus to sell, helping them to break the poverty trap. Since 2006, there has been a noticeable improvement in the lives of the members.
A cattle and goat stocking project has resulted in over 200 members owning livestock. A project to introduce improved varieties of crops has led to higher crop yields.
Monitoring confirms the members financial wellbeing has improved. Many have been able to replace mud brick and thatch houses with fired brick houses with a corrugated steel roof, children’s education fees have been met, and several of their children now have degrees and professional qualifications.
GOAL 2: Zero Hunger
Improved agricultural practices and crop varieties have led to higher yields alleviating problems with hunger. The construction and operation of 3 grain stores has led to secure food and seed storage. During the 2017 drought funding from the UK provided over 32T of grain for the very poor in Kachumbala and Soroti to help alleviate hunger.
GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being
SPT designed a 16 room Medical Centre in the grounds of Soroti Baptist Church, which was built by Cardiff based charity Engineers for Overseas Development (EFOD) between 2008/9. SPT equipped the premises, and the Centre is run by a local team of 12 staff. The Centre provides low cost medical, dental, optometry and laboratory testing services. SaltPeter Trust provides financial and training support, scholarships, and arranges visits Soroti twice each year for UK Medical and managerial staff to enhance the skills of the staff.
GOAL 4: Quality Education
SPT has a child education sponsorship programme supporting primary, secondary and tertiary education, sponsoring children through their school years. Over 20 children have completed primary and secondary education, Two have graduated, 4 have diplomas, 2 more are in University. Several are in primary or secondary school.
Where pupils have found academia difficult, SPT have funded vocational courses.
Two nurses are currently benefiting from scholarships to enhance their nursing qualifications.
Over the last 16 years SPT have run conferences for over 1000 Pastors and Church leaders.
GOAL 5: Gender Equality
SaltPeter Trust humanitarian and medical aid and training to all regardless of age, gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. WE have provided Marriage Courses for couples to improve marriages and teach equality. We sponsor male and female students and employ male and female staff at the centre based on ability.
GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SPT have fit solar power systems in all the buildings they develop, and have introduced domestic systems for its workers.
GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
